A domino set, sometimes called a deck or pack, typically contains rectangular tiles. The standard Sino-European set comprises 28 dominoes, often called "bones," "cards," "tiles," "tickets," "stones," or "spinners." Each tile is divided into two square ends, each marked with a number of spots or left blank. Domino sets are versatile gaming tools, similar to playing cards or dice, supporting a wide array of games. Larger sets (double-9 and double-12) exist, used for games like Mexican Train and Chicken Foot. Different regions feature unique domino games: England (Muggins), Scandinavia (Bergen), Mexico (Mexican Train), and Spain (Matador).
Dominoes originated in Song Dynasty China. They emerged in Italy during the 18th century, though the precise evolution from Chinese origins remains unclear.
General Domino Rules:
Blocking Games:
The most basic domino game involves two players and a double-six set. The 28 tiles are shuffled and form the stock. Each player draws seven tiles, keeping them hidden from their opponent. A player begins by playing a tile, the specific starting tile varying by game (e.g., highest double in Muggins, 0-0 in Bergen, next lowest double in Mexican Train). Players take turns adding tiles to the line of play, matching values on adjacent ends. The game concludes when a player plays their last tile or the game becomes blocked. In a blocked game, the player who caused the block receives points from the remaining tiles in their opponent's hand.
Scoring Games:
Points are awarded for specific configurations, moves, or emptying one's hand. Many scoring games use variations of the draw game. In Muggins, open ends must add up to multiples of five. In Bergen, points are scored when open ends match. Failure to call "domino" before placing a tile, followed by another player calling "domino" afterward, results in the first player drawing an extra tile. In Mexican Train, the double-zero domino is worth 50 points.
Draw Games:
In draw games (blocking or scoring), players can draw tiles from the stock before playing. The score is calculated by the pips remaining in the losing player's hand and the stock (usually requiring two tiles to remain). Draw games are often simply called "dominoes."
