The journey of *The Wheel of Time* on Prime Video has come to an abrupt halt after Amazon decided to cancel the series following the conclusion of Season 3. According to Deadline, the decision came after "lengthy deliberations," where executives, despite their appreciation for the show, found it financially unfeasible to continue.
Based on the beloved fantasy book series by Robert Jordan and featuring Rosamund Pike in the lead role, *The Wheel of Time* faced significant backlash from fans over the first two seasons due to controversial deviations from the source material. However, Season 3 managed to win back a majority of the fanbase and was seen as setting the stage for even greater achievements.
The cancellation has left fans disheartened, especially given that there was so much more of *The Wheel of Time*’s epic story left to explore. Many felt the series was only just beginning to hit its stride.
Financial considerations were the primary reason behind the cancellation. The high production costs of *The Wheel of Time* became too burdensome for co-producers Sony Pictures TV and Amazon MGM Studios—the latter also responsible for the costly *The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power*. As Deadline reported:
... the Season 3 overall performance was not strong enough compared to the show’s cost for Prime Video to commit to another season and the streamer could not make it work after examining different scenarios and following discussions with lead studio Sony TV, sources said.
IGN's review of *The Wheel of Time* Season 3 awarded it an impressive 8/10, stating: "The Wheel of Time finally achieves its full potential in season 3, which is filled with rich characters finding their place in Robert Jordan’s complex fantasy world."
While the TV adaptation of *The Wheel of Time* has concluded, fans can look forward to a new 'AAA Open-World RPG' in development. IGN had the opportunity to interview iwot Studios, the rights holder of *The Wheel of Time*, to delve deeper into this exciting new project.
