Experiencing Assassin's Creed Shadows Cafe in Harajuku

Assassin's Creed Shadows launched on March 20th, 2025, and to celebrate, Ubisoft has set up a themed cafe in Harajuku. Game8 had the privilege of previewing this exclusive event, so dive in to discover our insights on the venue, delectable offerings, and fascinating exhibitions.

Hidden Away from the Public

Something of a Secret

The weather in Harajuku was surprisingly mild today, a stark contrast to the heavy snow just two days ago. Although not yet fully spring, the air hinted at warmer days to come, making it an ideal time to explore the outdoors. Amidst the usual hustle and bustle around Harajuku Station, with tourists and young locals queuing up at fashionable stalls and stores, a quiet retreat awaited just around the corner from Takeshita Street.

In this serene setting, tucked away from prying eyes, Ubisoft unveiled a themed cafe celebrating the launch of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Partnering with the series' major fan, Dante Carver, the event was hosted at the chic dotcom space Tokyo venue. Game8 was invited to a media preview before the public opening tonight, and we extend our gratitude to Ubisoft. Rest assured, this article remains unsponsored, and Ubisoft will see it simultaneously with our readers.

The Venue

dotcom space Tokyo

While the location was discreetly tucked away, the entrance was anything but subtle, boldly proclaiming "Assassin’s Creed Shadows" in vibrant neon lights. The display showcased the game's protagonists, Yasuke and Naoe, intertwined with the iconic Assassin’s Brotherhood emblem.

Despite never having visited dotcom space Tokyo before, the venue retained its recognizable, modern, minimalist charm. The space featured white walls, exposed ceilings, and cracked floors (one of which I stumbled upon), complemented by sleek drink machines and angular beige furniture. Two long tables and several seating areas along the left wall provided ample space for approximately 40-50 guests.

The Assassin’s Creed theme was evident but surface-level: posters of the series lined the walls, artwork adorned the space, Ubisoft logo pillows were scattered about, and encyclopedias and artbooks from past entries were displayed. A projector played a silent show from the Shadows event in Kyoto from February, while classic background music from the games added ambiance.

The back of the venue housed several exhibits, which I'll delve into later. But first, let's explore the culinary offerings.

The Menu

Pleasantly Affordable

The themed cafe's menu was surprisingly budget-friendly. Drinks ranged from 650 to 750 yen (about $4 to $5 USD), while food items were priced at 800 yen (about $5.30 USD). Though pricier than the ubiquitous 100 yen vending machine drinks, the specialty offerings and branding justified the cost. Plus, a free goodie bag (while supplies last) and an extra item for ordering food or drinks made it an excellent value for fans.

Drink options included:
⚫︎ Cafe Latte for the Assassin who Serves the Light - 650円
⚫︎ Cafe Mocha for the Assassin who Works in the Dark - 750円
⚫︎ Shadows 檸檬水 (Lemonade in Japanese) - 700円
⚫︎ Valhalla Sitronbrus (Lemonade in Norwegian) - 700円
⚫︎ Odyssey λεμονάδα (Lemonade in Greek) - 700円

Food choices were limited to:
⚫︎ Assassin’s Creed Dolce Set - 800円
⚫︎ Assassin’s Creed Crest Toast - 800円

At the media event, we sampled both food options but had to select one drink. Craving caffeine, I opted for the Shadows Lemonade in solidarity with the launch. After waiting for my number to be called, my tray arrived with the food, drink, and a tote bag of goodies. I then found a spot to sit and capture the moment with photos.

The Food

The Toast Tasted Terrific

The aroma of melted cheese filled the air, tempting me even before I sat down. The cheese-covered toast, adorned with the Assassin Brotherhood logo (possibly paprika), came with a side of syrup. While some might find the combination unusual, the salty cheese and sweet syrup complemented each other beautifully. Unfortunately, taking too many photos meant my toast was lukewarm by the time I ate it. The crust was a bit tough, but the inside remained soft and fluffy, showcasing the unique texture of Japanese bread.

Sipping my red lemonade, which may have been soda with food coloring but hinted at cranberry, added to the experience. My taste buds weren't expert enough to confirm, so I invite any connoisseurs to weigh in via comments.

Dolce Disappoints

The Dolce Set offered a madeleine and a cookie, both featuring the AC logo in sugar. The madeleine was moist with an enjoyable almond aftertaste, though its density made me reach for my drink. It would have paired better with coffee, but I stood by my lemonade choice.

The cookie, while visually appealing with its teal color, was less impressive. The hard frosting required a strategic approach to bite into, and the cookie itself, while tasting mildly of cocoa, didn't stand out. The madeleine was the clear winner between the two.

The Exhibitions

Artwork and Replicas

After savoring the food, I explored the exhibitions more closely. Replicas of in-game items, including Yasuke’s mask and Naoe’s Hidden Blade, were on display. Two mannequins donned faithful recreations of the protagonists' outfits. Although I had hoped for live cosplayers for photo ops, the mannequins sufficed. Detailed origami and figurines added to the display, along with a striking painting of the protagonists.

Many of these items were available for purchase from PureArts, such as the Hidden Blade and Yasuke’s helmet. For those on a budget, simply admiring the craftsmanship of the exhibits was a rewarding experience.

Is It Worth It?

If You Temper Your Expectations

Predicting the crowd size is challenging, given the divisive opinions on the game and the venue's hidden location. However, themed cafes often draw both casual and dedicated fans, and the event runs for a limited time from March 22nd to 23rd, from 11 am to 6:30 pm.

For Assassin’s Creed fans, a visit is worthwhile if expectations are managed. Don't anticipate an immersive world experience; instead, view it as a themed cafe with food, drinks, and merchandise. The reasonable prices, tasty cheese toast, free gifts, and free access to art and exhibitions make it a solid choice.

While cosplayers would have added flair, such extras aren't guaranteed at pop-up events. If you're a fan in or visiting Japan this weekend, consider stopping by for around 30 minutes before resuming your adventures. For non-fans, the cheese toast and colorful drinks still hold appeal, but the full experience might be less engaging.

If you're a fan but not in Japan for the next two days, I hope this article allows you to experience the event vicariously.
