Clair Obscur: Expedition 33: A Turn-Based RPG Inspired by Classics
Sandfall Interactive's upcoming turn-based RPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, is making waves with its unique blend of classic JRPG elements and modern sensibilities. Inspired by the Belle Epoque era of France and heavily influenced by titles like Final Fantasy and Persona, the game promises a fresh take on the genre.
The game seamlessly integrates real-time elements into its turn-based combat system. Players strategically input commands, but must also react swiftly to enemy attacks, creating a dynamic and engaging experience reminiscent of Persona and Sea of Stars. This innovative approach, combined with high-fidelity graphics, sets it apart from other turn-based RPGs.
Creative director Guillaume Broche, in interviews with various gaming outlets, highlighted the significant influence of the Final Fantasy series (specifically FF VIII, IX, and X) on the game's core mechanics and design philosophy. While acknowledging the stylistic inspiration drawn from Persona's camera work and dynamic menus, Broche emphasized that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is not a mere imitation but a unique interpretation shaped by his personal experiences with these classic titles.
The game's narrative centers around preventing a mysterious antagonist, the Paintress, from unleashing death upon the world. Exploration takes place in a richly detailed open world featuring unique environments, such as the gravity-defying Flying Waters, encouraging player experimentation and strategic party management. Players have complete control over their party, allowing for on-the-fly character switching and the utilization of unique traversal abilities to overcome environmental puzzles.
Broche expressed his hope that players will embrace the game's design, experimenting with unconventional character builds and strategies. The development team aims to create a title that resonates with players in the same way classic JRPGs impacted their lives.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is slated for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox in 2025.
