Harrison Ford, the iconic actor behind Indiana Jones, has expressed his approval of Troy Baker's portrayal of the beloved character in the video game "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle." In an interview with The Wall Street Journal Magazine, Ford humorously remarked, "You don’t need artificial intelligence to steal my soul. You can already do it for nickels and dimes with good ideas and talent." He praised Baker's performance, emphasizing that it was achieved without the use of AI.
"Indiana Jones and the Great Circle" was released in December and is considered an authentic, albeit possibly non-canonical, addition to the storied franchise. This release came shortly after the 2023 film "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," which did not fare well with audiences. In contrast, the game has been well-received, prompting speculation that the franchise might pivot towards more game-centric storytelling rather than relying on Ford reprising his role.
Ford, known for his roles in Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and his upcoming appearance in Marvel films, joins a growing list of creatives who are critical of AI's role in media. Notable figures like Tim Burton have described AI-generated art as "very disturbing," while Nicolas Cage has called it a "dead end." The concerns extend to the voice acting community as well, with actors like Ned Luke from "Grand Theft Auto 5" and Doug Cockle from "The Witcher" voicing strong opposition. Luke criticized a chatbot that used his voice without consent, and Cockle told IGN that while AI is "inevitable," it's also "dangerous," potentially robbing voice actors of income.
