HBO is reportedly in advanced negotiations with acclaimed actor John Lithgow, known for his role as Lord Farquaad in Shrek, to portray the iconic Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in their upcoming Harry Potter series. While HBO remains tight-lipped, Variety reports that a deal is imminent. This follows earlier speculation in November naming Mark Rylance as the frontrunner for the Dumbledore role.
"We understand the significant interest surrounding this project and the resulting speculation," an HBO spokesperson stated. "We will only confirm casting details once contracts are finalized."
Lithgow's extensive credits include The World According to Garp, Terms of Endearment, Footloose, Dexter, and The Crown, showcasing his versatility and range.
The series will prioritize British talent, mirroring the films. This aligns with J.K. Rowling's reported involvement in the casting process.
Announced in April 2023, the Harry Potter adaptation promises a faithful, more in-depth exploration of the beloved novels than previously seen in the film franchise. Executive producers Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod (the latter also known for Game of Thrones) will oversee the series.
