Helldivers 2 Creative Director Dreams of Epic Crossovers, But Prioritizes Game's Integrity

Johan Pilestedt, creative director of Helldivers 2, recently revealed his wish list for potential game crossovers, sparking excitement among fans. While he expressed enthusiasm for collaborations with iconic franchises like Starship Troopers, Terminator, Warhammer 40,000, Alien, Predator, Star Wars, and even Blade Runner, he emphasized a cautious approach.

The initial discussion began with a playful exchange on Twitter regarding a crossover with the tabletop game, Trench Crusade. While initially enthusiastic, Pilestedt later acknowledged the significant challenges involved in such collaborations.

Trench Crusade, a skirmish wargame set in an alternate World War I featuring a clash between Heaven and Hell, presented an intriguing possibility. However, Pilestedt clarified that his dream crossover list was purely speculative, emphasizing the potential for diluting Helldivers 2's unique satirical, militaristic identity if too many collaborations were pursued. He stated that incorporating all his desired franchises would create "a ‘not helldivers’ experience."

The allure of crossovers is undeniable, especially in the live-service game market. Helldivers 2's intense alien combat and detailed setting seem ripe for partnerships. Yet, Pilestedt prioritizes maintaining the game's cohesive universe and tone.

While open to both large and small crossover elements – a single weapon or a full character skin acquired via in-game currency – Pilestedt stressed that these remain personal preferences, with no concrete decisions made.

Arrowhead Studios' focus on preserving Helldivers 2's unique atmosphere is appreciated by many.
