YouTuber Jacksepticeye, whose real name is Seán William McLoughlin, recently shared a disheartening update with his fans in a video titled 'A Bad Month.' In this video, he disclosed that he had been working on an animated show based on the critically acclaimed survival horror game, Soma, developed by Frictional Games. The project, which he was deeply passionate about, was unfortunately canceled, leaving him "quite upset."
Soma, which hit the market in 2015, has always held a special place in Jacksepticeye's heart. He has streamed it extensively and often cites it as one of his top favorite games due to its compelling narrative. The animated show was a project he had been working on for a year, collaborating closely with the developers. However, the show fell apart unexpectedly when an unnamed party decided to take the project "in a different direction," a move that left Jacksepticeye feeling deeply disappointed.
Jacksepticeye expressed that the cancellation had a significant impact on his plans for 2025, turning them "upside down." He had anticipated dedicating much of his time to this project, planning to focus less on regular uploads in favor of this creative endeavor. The sudden halt of the Soma animated show left him questioning his priorities and next steps, describing the past month as tough and frustrating.
While Jacksepticeye did not name the other parties involved, IGN has reached out to Frictional Games for a comment on the matter. Meanwhile, Frictional Games has continued to expand its portfolio beyond Soma. Following Soma's success, they released two more entries in the Amnesia series: Amnesia: Rebirth in 2020 and Amnesia: The Bunker in 2023. In a statement from July 2023, Frictional's creative director Thomas Grip mentioned their intent to explore themes beyond horror, aiming to focus on other emotional qualities and immersive experiences in their future projects.
