Sid Meier's Civilization VII: A VR Revolution on Meta Quest 3

Civilization VII (Civ VII) is making its VR debut this Spring 2025, exclusively on the Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets. This marks the franchise's first foray into virtual and mixed reality gaming.

Meta Quest 3 Exclusivity and Developer Statements

2K Games and Firaxis Games revealed the VR version during the Civ World Summit on February 8th, 2025. Dennis Shirk, Executive Franchise Producer, expressed enthusiasm for launching Civ VII and ushering in a new era of strategic gaming. Chris Pruett, Meta's Director of Games, highlighted the exciting timing of the release, emphasizing Civ VII VR's appeal to dedicated strategy gamers. Notably, while Civ VII is launching on PlayStation consoles, a PSVR2 version isn't currently planned.

Immersive Gameplay and Multiplayer Options

Civ VII VR immerses players in a command table environment, offering detailed views of units and buildings. Players can seamlessly switch between virtual and mixed reality modes. The VR experience places players in a museum setting, while the mixed reality version adapts to the player's physical space.

The game supports single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer for up to four players using Meta Quest headsets. Players can team up against AI or compete directly against each other. Online multiplayer requires a 2K and Meta account.

Addressing Player Feedback and Future Updates

Firaxis Games is actively addressing player feedback from Civ VII's early access period (February 6th, 2025, for Deluxe and Founder's Editions). The team is prioritizing UI improvements to enhance intuitiveness and map readability. Planned updates include community-requested features such as multiplayer teams and diverse map types. A quality-of-life update in March will focus on UI adjustments, AI balancing, diplomacy refinements, and bug fixes.

Release Information
