Metro 2033's Cut Content Restored After 15 Years

To commemorate this milestone, a passionate team from 3 Game Studio has launched Metro Repair 2009, a community-made modification that brings back lost content and features from the game's early beta versions.

Rather than introducing new gameplay, Metro Repair 2009 revives elements that appeared in promotional materials, early screenshots, and beta builds but were ultimately cut from the final game. Artyom's Hands: The character model for Artyom's hands has been reverted to the version used in build 375. Nighttime on "Alley" and "Library" Levels: These levels now take place at night, matching the weather shown in the GamePlay magazine demo where Andrei Prokhorov presented an early version of Metro 2033. Melnyk’s Reaction in the Prologue: If players press the hermetic door button and then take no further action, Melnyk will voice his frustration, adding depth to the character interaction. Bearded Stepfather at VDNKh: Artyom’s bearded stepfather now appears in the early chapters, including the “8 Days Before” segment. Updated Gunsmith at VDNKh: The gunsmith character now has expanded dialogue, including a new line about knives, strengthening his role in the narrative. Restored Lines in "Catacombs" and "Kiev Tunnel": Additional conversations have been added back into these sections, enriching the story. Soldier Redesign on Turgenevskaya: One soldier’s appearance has been updated to match that seen on promotional posters from 2008–2009. Companion Appearance Update: A companion’s look has been revised to align with designs from around 2009. Boris Reacts to Random Shooting: Boris will now react if Artyom fires his weapon carelessly, adding realism to their exchanges.

These careful adjustments honor the original vision for Metro 2033 while giving veteran players a fresh look at well-known settings and characters. By recovering elements that were cut during development, Metro Repair 2009 connects the game’s development history with its final version.
