MultiVersus to Conclude Operations After Season 5
Warner Bros. Games has announced the impending closure of MultiVersus, its popular platform fighter, following the completion of its fifth and final season. The game will officially shut down on May 30, 2025.
Season 5: A Final Curtain Call
The official announcement, made via Twitter (X) on January 31, 2025, confirmed that Season 5, launching February 4, 2025, will be the game's last. This season will introduce two highly anticipated characters: Aquaman from DC Comics and Lola Bunny from Looney Tunes. Both characters will be unlockable through gameplay. Following the season's conclusion, MultiVersus will be removed from all digital storefronts (PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store).
While no official reason for the shutdown has been given, the announcement expressed gratitude to the MultiVersus community for their support.
Offline Play: A Lasting Legacy
Players will retain access to a local offline mode after May 30th. This mode allows solo play against AI or multiplayer matches with up to three friends. To access this, players must download the latest version of the game between February 4th and May 30th. The game will automatically create a local save file linked to the player's online account, preserving all earned and purchased content.
Real-money transactions have ceased as of January 31, 2025. Any remaining Gleamium (in-game currency) can be used until the end of Season 5.
A Brief History and Community Response
Launched in July 2022 as a free-to-play title, MultiVersus quickly gained popularity, drawing comparisons to Super Smash Bros. A relaunch in May 2024 introduced new features, including characters, rollback netcode, and a PvE mode. However, persistent technical issues, including frequent disconnections and player concerns regarding microtransactions, reportedly led to a significant player base decline.
At its closure, MultiVersus will boast a roster of 35 playable characters from various franchises. The game remains available for download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC until May 30, 2025, at 9 AM PDT.
