Netflix Achieves Record Subscriber Growth, Announces Price Hikes
Netflix concluded 2024 with a record-breaking fourth quarter, surpassing 300 million paid subscribers for the first time. The streaming giant added a remarkable 19 million subscribers in Q4 alone, culminating in a total annual increase of 41 million subscribers. While this marks the final quarter for official subscriber growth reporting, Netflix assures users that key milestones will still be announced.
This significant achievement is coupled with another price increase across most plans in the U.S., Canada, Portugal, and Argentina. This marks the latest in a series of price adjustments, with increases occurring in 2022 and 2023, and an average annual increase of roughly $1-$2 prior to that. Netflix justifies these price hikes by citing continued investment in programming and a commitment to delivering enhanced value to its members.
The shareholder letter, however, lacked specific details regarding the price changes. Reports from The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg suggest the following adjustments:
A noteworthy addition is a new "extra member with ads" plan. This allows users subscribed to the ad-supported plan to add an additional household member for a fee. Previously, this feature was only available to standard and premium subscribers.
Despite the price increases, Netflix's financial performance remains robust. Q4 revenue surged 16% year-over-year to $10.2 billion, mirroring the annual revenue growth to $39 billion. The company projects a 12% to 14% year-over-year revenue increase in 2025.
