Nintendo has addressed questions about the compatibility of its new GameCube-style controller, acknowledging there could be "issues" when playing newer Nintendo Switch 2 titles with the accessory.
The GameCube controller was first shown during this month's 60-minute Nintendo Direct presentation. Initially, fine print indicated the controller would only function with GameCube classics available through the Nintendo Switch Online retro collection, and not with broader Switch 2 game releases.
Nintendo has now provided further clarification, restating that the retro-style controller was primarily developed for use with GameCube titles. While it may be possible to connect the GameCube controller to other Switch 2 games, players might encounter issues since the classic accessory lacks "all the buttons and functions" present on modern controllers.
Nintendo also reiterated that the GameCube controller is designed exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
"The Nintendo GameCube controller is intended for playing the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics library and offers an optional control method for those specific games," Nintendo told Nintendo Life in an official statement.
"Because it doesn't include all the buttons and capabilities found on other Switch 2-compatible controllers, players might experience certain limitations when using it for other titles. Additionally, the Nintendo GameCube controller is only functional with the Nintendo Switch 2 and cannot be used with the original Nintendo Switch."

The GameCube collection marks a significant expansion of the Nintendo Switch Online library, giving subscribers access to numerous beloved titles from the 2000s, including The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Soulcalibur 2. These games will all be available when the library launches this summer. Nintendo has confirmed that the service will continue to grow over time, with hinted additions like Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Strikers, and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness.
