Nintendo has confirmed that the live-action The Legend of Zelda movie will premiere on March 26, 2027.
The announcement was made via the newly launched Nintendo Today! app, which debuted during the March 2025 Nintendo Direct. No further details about the film were provided.
Video game icon Shigeru Miyamoto broke the news as a surprise teaser at the end of the showcase. This comprehensive mobile app offers a range of features dedicated Nintendo enthusiasts should know about.
This central hub for Nintendo serves as a daily calendar and news feed, delivering information directly to players as it breaks. Miyamoto gave the example that following next week's Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, fans can log into the Nintendo Today app to get all the updates, with more news arriving "daily" from that point forward.
However, major news has already begun, with the Zelda movie release date confirmation likely to drive many fans to download the app in hopes of similar major announcements in the future. It's notable that Nintendo's news app was the first to report the Zelda movie news, ahead of the company's official social media channels.
Nintendo and Sony Pictures first announced the major live-action The Legend of Zelda movie project in November 2023, with Wes Ball (The Maze Runner, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) set to direct and Avi Arad and Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto serving as producers.
Little is known about the movie itself. Ball has stated his vision is for a "live-action Miyazaki," referencing the beloved filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, the founder of Studio Ghibli and creator of numerous anime classics like My Neighbor Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, and Spirited Away. Ball still envisions the Zelda movie as a "serious" adaptation with a realistic feel and has clarified he intends to use minimal motion capture for this "grounded" film.
