Path of Exile 2 Expeditions: A Comprehensive Guide

Path of Exile 2 introduces Expeditions, a thrilling endgame event lifted from the original game's Expedition League. This guide details how to initiate Expeditions, master the detonation mechanic, navigate the passive skill tree, and maximize your rewards.

Expedition Mechanics & Detonation

Expeditions are marked on the Atlas with a distinctive light blue spiral icon. You can guarantee an Expedition encounter by placing an Expedition Precursor Tablet in a completed Lost Tower slot.

Upon entering an Expedition map, locate the central area with markers and an NPC tent. The core gameplay involves strategically placing explosives near markers to trigger events:

  • Red Markers: Detonating explosives near these spawns Runic Monsters. Larger markers yield larger monster packs, further empowered by Unearthed Remnants.
  • Unearthed Remnants: These relics provide beneficial or detrimental modifiers. For instance, increased monster elemental damage might be offset by higher item rarity from chests.
  • Black Markers (Spiral Symbol): Explosives near these spawn Excavated Chests containing Artifacts, Logbooks, currencies, and high-tier gear.

The explosives UI (bottom-right) shows the area of effect. For optimal farming, avoid overlapping AoE circles. After placing explosives, activate the Detonator. You can strategically retreat after detonation to engage enemies later with powerful AoE skills. Death resets the map, but leaving the area doesn't end the event.

Expedition Pinnacle Map

Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests have a chance to drop Expedition Logbooks. These open unique Expedition maps via Dannig in your hideout. Slot the Logbook and click "Open Portals."

These maps offer significantly more explosives and a chance to encounter Olroth, the Pinnacle Boss (indicated by a skull on the minimap). Defeating Olroth is crucial for earning Expedition Passive Skill Tree points (double points per victory).

Expedition Passive Skill Tree

Located within the Atlas Passive Skill Tree, the Expedition tree enhances rewards and difficulty. It features Notable nodes and nodes increasing Logbook difficulty (and Olroth encounters). Each new Notable node requires defeating Olroth at an increased difficulty.

Notable Expedition Passive Effect Requirements
Extreme Archaeology Reduces Explosives to 1, but boosts radius (150%), placement range (100%), and reduces enemy Life (20%) N/A
Disturbed Rest 50% more Runic Monster Flags N/A
Detailed Records 50% more Logbooks, Logbooks always spawn with 3x Modifiers Disturbed Rest
Timed Detonations 50% more Artifacts, Detonation chains travel 50% faster N/A
Legendary Battles 50% more Rare monsters, 50% more Exotic Coinage from Runic Monsters Timed Detonations
Frail Treasures 3x more Excavated Chest Markers, but they disappear after 5 seconds N/A
Weight of History 35% boost to Remnant effects N/A
Unearthed Anomalies Remnants gain an additional Suffix and Prefix modifier Weight of History

Prioritize "Disturbed Rest," "Detailed Records," and "Timed Detonations" for significant reward boosts. Then consider "Weight of History," "Unearthed Anomalies," and "Legendary Battles" for harder, but more rewarding, Expeditions. Avoid "Extreme Archaeology" due to the significant reduction in explosives.

Expedition Rewards

Artifacts are the primary rewards, each usable with a specific vendor for unique gear:

Reward Use Gear
Broken Circle Artifact Gwennen Weapons
Black Scythe Artifact Tujen Belts & Jewelry
Order Artifact Rog Armor
Sun Artifact Dannig Used for other Artifacts
Exotic Coinage Refreshes vendor inventory N/A

Expedition Logbooks, obtained from Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests, unlock the Pinnacle map system, offering a chance to fight Olroth for exceptional rewards and double passive skill points.
