Exciting news for Power Rangers fans: a live-action series is reportedly in the works for Disney+. According to The Wrap, the showrunners behind the successful Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, are in discussions to write, showrun, and produce this new take on the iconic franchise for Disney+ and 20th Century TV. Hasbro, the current owner of the Power Rangers, aims to refresh the series to attract a new generation while maintaining the loyalty of its existing fanbase.
In 2018, Hasbro acquired the Power Rangers franchise from Saban Properties in a significant $522 million deal. At the time, Hasbro's chairman and CEO, Brian Goldner, highlighted the "tremendous upside potential" of the brand. He emphasized the opportunities across toys, games, consumer products, digital gaming, entertainment, and global markets. This acquisition followed the unsuccessful 2017 movie reboot, which attempted a darker, grittier approach but failed to gain traction at the box office, leading to the cancellation of planned sequels.
Hasbro's vision for Power Rangers aligns with their broader strategy of revitalizing beloved IPs. They are also working on other ambitious projects, such as a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series titled The Forgotten Realms for Netflix, an animated Magic: The Gathering series, and a Magic: The Gathering cinematic universe, showcasing their commitment to expanding their entertainment portfolio.
