Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 have proven their enduring appeal, continuing to dominate sales charts years after their initial release. These titles are shining examples of Rockstar's prowess in crafting immersive open-world experiences, which have earned widespread acclaim and a loyal fanbase.
Launched in 2013, Grand Theft Auto 5 immerses players in the lives of three protagonists navigating the sprawling, chaotic world of Los Santos. The game's blockbuster status was cemented not only by its initial success but also through its subsequent re-releases across various platforms and the introduction of its highly popular online multiplayer mode. GTA 5 has since become one of the best-selling pieces of entertainment media in history. On the other hand, Red Dead Redemption 2, released in 2018, offers players a rich journey through the Old West as outlaw Arthur Morgan, and it too has garnered significant commercial success and critical praise.
Despite nearly 12 years since its debut and almost seven years since Red Dead Redemption 2 hit the shelves, both games are still seeing robust sales. According to PlayStation's December 2024 download charts, GTA 5 secured the third spot among the best-selling titles for the PS5 in both the US/Canada and Europe, and it also ranked fifth for the PS4 in these regions. Meanwhile, Red Dead Redemption 2 topped the sales charts for the PS4 in the United States and was the second highest-selling game in the EU, only surpassed by EA Sports FC 25.
GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 Are Still Topping PlayStation Sales Charts
The European 2024 GSD figures, as reported by VGC, indicate that Grand Theft Auto 5 was the fourth highest-selling game of the year, improving from its fifth-place ranking in 2023. Red Dead Redemption 2 also saw an uptick, moving to seventh place from eighth the previous year. Take-Two, the parent company of Rockstar, recently announced that GTA 5 has now exceeded 205 million in sales, while Red Dead Redemption 2 has surpassed 67 million copies sold.
The sustained success of these titles underscores the lasting impact of Rockstar's games. As fans eagerly anticipate the future, the buzz around the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6, set to launch later this year, is palpable. Additionally, there are whispers that Red Dead Redemption 2 might see a port to the forthcoming Nintendo Switch 2 console, further expanding its reach.
