Rogue Loops: A Hades-Inspired Roguelike with a Twist
The upcoming indie roguelike, Rogue Loops, is generating buzz with its striking resemblance to Hades, both aesthetically and in its core gameplay loop. However, Rogue Loops introduces a unique mechanic that sets it apart. Currently available as a free demo on Steam, the game is slated for a PC release in early 2025.
The roguelike genre's recent surge in popularity has inspired numerous interpretations, ranging from action-packed titles like Returnal to more traditional dungeon crawlers reminiscent of Hades and its early access sequel. Rogue Loops falls squarely into the latter category, offering a top-down perspective and a repeating dungeon filled with randomized loot and ability upgrades.
While comparisons to Hades are inevitable, given its Steam trailer and demo, Rogue Loops distinguishes itself with a compelling twist: ability upgrades come with distinct drawbacks. These downsides, similar in concept to Hades' Chaos Gates (though potentially more impactful and persistent), significantly influence gameplay. They add a layer of strategic depth, forcing players to carefully consider the risks and rewards of each upgrade.
The narrative centers on a family trapped in a deadly time loop. Players navigate five floors of procedurally generated dungeons, encountering diverse enemies and bosses. Each playthrough unlocks new upgrades, allowing for unique character builds utilizing both beneficial and detrimental effects.
While a precise release date remains unconfirmed, Rogue Loops is projected to launch on Steam in Q1 2025. Until then, players can explore the first floor via the free demo. Other roguelikes, such as Dead Cells and Hades 2, offer satisfying alternatives in the meantime.
