RuneScape: Dragonwilds has taken the gaming world by storm with its unexpected early access launch, coming just weeks after its initial teaser. Dive in to discover what the early access phase entails and what's on the horizon for this thrilling addition to the RuneScape universe.
RuneScape: Dragonwilds thrilled fans with a surprise early access release announcement. During the early access livestream on April 16, developer Jagex revealed that the game is now accessible on Steam, mere weeks following the debut of its first trailer.
The community was taken aback as the game had only recently been added to Steam's wishlist on April 1 and showcased its first gameplay teaser on April 2. The project was first hinted at in 2022, but it wasn't until late 2024 that Jagex initiated alpha testing signups for a "new survival game set in the RuneScape universe." The official unveiling as RuneScape: Dragonwilds occurred on March 31, 2025.
Jagex estimates that Dragonwilds will see its full release in early 2026. They emphasized their commitment to perfection, stating, "We want to spend the time to get everything right to ensure that our players enjoy a complete, satisfying experience that they’ll want to return to with friends time and again."
Jesse America, Jagex's Executive Producer, highlighted that Dragonwilds offers a fresh take on the RuneScape experience, tailored for the franchise's dedicated fans. He noted that the early access phase marks the beginning of their development journey, saying, "Throughout Early Access, we’ll be regularly updating the game with new content and features, all while actively listening to the community to craft an iconic open-world survival crafting game that resonates with both our core RuneScape enthusiasts and newcomers."
Jagex unveiled the early access roadmap for Dragonwilds, showcasing the exciting plans for this period. A key highlight is the introduction of Fellhollow, a new region teetering between life and death, ruled by the soul-eater dragon Imaru. This area is influenced by the wild anima of Ashenfall and the cursed energy of the Underworld, and players will be accompanied by the iconic RuneScape character, Death.
Players can look forward to new quests, lore, gear, and music, along with enhanced skills in magic, ranged combat, and farming. The game will also introduce Lesser Dragons as a new enemy type, dragon slayer gear, and new gameplay modes including hardcore and creative modes. While specific release dates for these updates remain under wraps, Jagex assures continuous enhancements to the game throughout the early access phase.
Purchasing Dragonwilds during its early access period grants players exclusive in-game rewards. As detailed on the game's Steam page, "Early Adopters" will receive:
