Ryan Reynolds Explains Deadpool's Solo Path, Avoiding Avengers and X-Men

Ryan Reynolds has cast doubt on the possibility of Deadpool joining either the Avengers or the X-Men, stating that such a move would signify the character's "end." Despite the success of Deadpool & Wolverine and Deadpool's in-movie desire to join the Avengers, Reynolds believes that fulfilling this wish would be detrimental to the character's essence.

Last month's Avengers: Doomsday cast reveal prominently featured several veteran X-Men actors, including Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden. This lineup confirms the significant involvement of the X-Men in the film. Grammer, known for his portrayal of Beast, debuted in the MCU via The Marvels' post-credits scene. Stewart, who played Charles Xavier/Professor X, had a brief appearance in the MCU in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as part of the Illuminati. Meanwhile, McKellen (Magneto), Cumming (Nightcrawler), Romijn (Mystique), and Marsden (Cyclops) have yet to make their MCU debuts. This raises the question of whether Avengers: Doomsday might secretly be an Avengers vs. X-Men movie.

Reynolds' name was notably absent from the Avengers: Doomsday cast list, though Channing Tatum, who portrayed Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine, was included. Reynolds' recent comments to Time magazine further suggest that a formal promotion of Deadpool to the Avengers or X-Men is unlikely. "If Deadpool becomes an Avenger or an X-Man, we're at the end," he stated, emphasizing that such a move would be mere wish fulfillment and not suitable for Deadpool.

However, Reynolds hinted at the possibility of a surprise cameo appearance for Deadpool, citing the positive reception to Wesley Snipes' cameo as Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine. This suggests that while a full-time membership in either team might not be on the cards, a supporting role could still be in play.

Looking ahead, Reynolds is currently working on a new project that involves an "ensemble," though he remained tight-lipped about the details. This could potentially lead to another Deadpool film featuring a variety of cameos, similar to Deadpool & Wolverine. Characters like Snipes' Blade, Tatum's Gambit, Jennifer Garner's Elektra, and Dafne Keen's Laura Kinney/X-23 could all make a return.

Other cast members like Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) and Joseph Quinn (Human Torch) have also shared their excitement. A recent set photo leak sparked speculation among fans, with some fearing negative implications for the X-Men.

Speculation also surrounds Oscar Isaac's potential appearance as Moon Knight in Avengers: Doomsday, fueled by his withdrawal from Star Wars Celebration due to scheduling conflicts. Marvel Studios producer Kevin Feige confirmed that the Avengers livestream did not reveal the entire Doomsday cast, hinting at more surprises to come.
