Actress Scarlett Johansson has earned two Academy Award nominations, yet she remains puzzled as to why Avengers: Endgame, in which she portrayed Black Widow, only received a single nomination for visual effects at the Oscars.
"How did this film not get nominated for an Oscar?" Johansson questioned about the 2019 Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster during a recent interview with Vanity Fair. "It was an impossible movie that should not have worked, yet it truly succeeds as a film — and it's also one of the most successful films of all time."
*Avengers: Endgame* is widely regarded as one of the finest entries in the MCU in recent years, yet the Academy has seldom bestowed top honors — such as nominations in the acting and directing categories — on superhero or genre films. In fact, the only Marvel film to receive such recognition to date is 2018's *Black Panther*. Nevertheless, Johansson's portrayal of Natasha Romanoff was certainly worthy of acclaim, from her debut in *Iron Man* in 2010 to her poignant death scene in *Endgame*.However, Johansson also shared with Vanity Fair her doubts about returning to the MCU. "It would be very hard for me to understand in what capacity [returning] would make sense for me, for the character that I play," she explained.

Following Black Widow's demise in Endgame, Johansson reprised her role as Romanoff one last time in the 2021 prequel film Black Widow, which she also executive produced.
