April 1st has come and gone, marking another year of the video game industry's playful April Fool's Day antics. Yet, the jest from the creators of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 might linger a bit longer in fans' memories. Just yesterday, the game's publisher, Focus Entertainment, announced a new Chaplain class as downloadable content (DLC) set to release on April 1st.

“In story mode, swap out Titus for The Chaplain and experience the game as a true Codex-compliant Ultramarine,” Focus Entertainment teased, likely with a chuckle behind their screens. This fictional DLC promised a new playable character in the story mode, complete with an 'Enhanced Dialogue System.' Every five minutes, the Chaplain would remind his comrades that “the Codex Astartes does not support this action,” and threaten to report them to the Inquisition.

The Chaplain's special ability, dubbed 'Discipline,' was said to involve reporting any deviation from the Codex Astartes, granting a 5% discipline bonus but at the cost of a 20% brotherhood penalty.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Chaplain JokeThe humor in this April Fool's gag resonates because, as any player of Space Marine 2's campaign knows, Chaplain Quintus scrutinizes protagonist Titus with unwavering suspicion for any hint of heresy. Despite Titus's proven loyalty to the Imperium, the Ultramarines, and the Emperor, Quintus remains vigilant, much like an overzealous school prefect eager to report any misbehavior.

Throughout the campaign, as Titus confronts the Tyranids and the traitorous Thousand Sons, it becomes apparent that there is something unique about him, which Chaplain Quintus finds unsettling. This has made the Chaplain a meme within the Space Marine community, a fact that the April Fool's Day prank cleverly exploited. Some fans have expressed a genuine interest in seeing the Chaplain as a playable character, not with the satirical abilities but as a warrior-priest devoted to the Emperor's veneration.

“This would actually go hard if this was real,” commented ResidentDrama9739 on the Space Marine subreddit, echoing the sentiments of many who are eager to discuss how the Chaplain might enhance the game.

While the Chaplain's appearance in the April Fool's Day jest may rule him out as an upcoming class, Space Marine 2 is indeed set to introduce a new class soon. Although Focus and developer Saber Interactive have kept the details under wraps, speculation is rife. Many believe it might be the Apothecary, the closest thing to a medic class for Space Marines, while others hope for the warp-powered Librarian.

Despite the unexpected announcement of Space Marine 3's development, Space Marine 2's year one roadmap continues to unfold, with Patch 7 slated for mid-April. In the coming months, players can look forward to not only the new class but also new PvE operations and melee weapons.

As the Space Marine saga progresses, fans eagerly await what new challenges and characters will be introduced, keeping the universe of Warhammer 40,000 vibrant and engaging.
