If you're a gamer, you've likely encountered the challenge of playing vertical arcade games on your phone and found the experience less than ideal. A modder named Max Kern has developed a solution called the Tate Mode mini controller, but does it truly address this issue?
Traditional controllers are designed for landscape mode gaming, similar to what you'd find on a Switch or Steam Deck. However, classic vertical shooters and retro games often require holding your phone in portrait mode, much like scrolling through Instagram.
Max Kern took matters into his own hands and created a compact USB-C gamepad specifically for portrait-mode gaming, known as Tate mode. This innovative controller plugs directly into your phone's USB-C port, eliminating the need for Bluetooth, charging, or extra batteries.
The Tate Mode mini controller is powered by a Raspberry Pi RP2040 chip, with the case and buttons 3D-printed through JLCPCB. If you're interested in building your own, Max has provided a detailed tutorial on his YouTube channel.

What’s Your Opinion on This Tate Mode Mini Controller? ------------------------------------------------------Utilizing the GP2040-CE firmware, this controller functions as a standard HID controller, making it compatible with Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac. Its small size doesn't compromise its versatility.
However, there are concerns about the strain it may put on the USB-C port, as the gamepad supports part of the phone's weight. Users need to hold both the phone and the controller carefully to avoid bending the connector over time.
On Reddit, opinions are mixed. Some users admire the ingenuity but worry about potential hand cramps, while others are more open to the concept.
It's important to note that this isn't a commercial product but a DIY project. Max has generously shared all the firmware and print files on Thingiverse and Github. What are your thoughts on this innovative little gamepad? We'd love to hear your comments!
