Top 10 LitRPG Books to Read in 2025

Author : Liam

Reading is my all-time favorite hobby. I enjoy playing video games and watching TV, but nothing quite matches the immersive experience of diving deep into a captivating book series. My journey into reading started with the enchanting world of Harry Potter, which opened the door to an array of genres including sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, and non-fiction. However, it was the LitRPG genre that truly captured my heart. My fascination with LitRPG was instantaneous and overwhelming, and it's now the only type of reading that satisfies my literary cravings. If you're eager to explore this fascinating genre with me, here are my top recommendations:

23See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleOne of the best aspects of these books is that they are all available through a Kindle Unlimited subscription. Given the extensive number of books in some series, a subscription can be a cost-effective way to indulge in your reading. Additionally, each title is accessible via an Audible subscription for those who prefer listening to their stories.

What Is LitRPG?

For newcomers to the genre, LitRPG, or literary role-playing game, integrates RPG elements reminiscent of video games into its narratives. While some stories involve characters entering video game worlds, the genre is broader, often incorporating leveling systems and power hierarchies that the protagonists must navigate through experience. My list includes a blend of progression fantasy and LitRPG, both of which deliver a similar, engaging experience.

  1. He Who Fights with Monsters

Our Top Pick### He Who Fights With Monsters

95Book 1 of 11See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleHe Who Fights with Monsters offers a thrilling, fast-paced journey filled with action and humor. Its unique universe and compelling characters make it an essential read for fans of fantasy comedy. This series is my top pick in the LitRPG genre, and each new book maintains the high quality of its predecessor.

The story centers on Jason Asano, who awakens inside a magical world's hedge maze with new powers and no hair. His quirky yet determined approach to this bizarre situation helps him navigate challenges ranging from cannibals and monsters to personal relationships. Jason's morally complex nature makes him a character you can't help but root for throughout the series, which is currently on its 11th book with more to come from author Shirtaloon.

  1. The Path of Ascension

### The Path of Ascension

33Book 1 of 8.See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleThe Path of Ascension offers a fresh take on the genre, focusing on a richly detailed universe centered around magical dungeon portals known as rifts and powerful immortals. The protagonist, Matt, is a young orphan driven by the desire to conquer these rifts and avenge his parents' deaths. Despite being assigned a seemingly useless Tier 1 talent, Matt's journey to overcome his limitations through hard work and determination is inspiring.

While the first book captured my attention, it was the character development in the subsequent volumes that truly cemented this series as a favorite of mine.

  1. Dungeon Crawler Carl

### Dungeon Crawler Carl

74Book 1 of 7.See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleDungeon Crawler Carl is a relentless adventure that keeps you hooked with its fast pace and unique characters. The protagonist, Carl, finds himself trapped with his ex-girlfriend's cat, Princess Donut, when the world ends. They must navigate an underground dungeon that doubles as an intergalactic game show, orchestrated by advanced alien races and a chaotic AI. The series, which maintains its excitement through to the seventh book released in 2024, is a must-read for LitRPG enthusiasts. Matt Dinniman, the author, also offers other compelling works that are worth exploring.

  1. Unsouled (Cradle Series)

### Unsouled (Cradle Series)

32Book 1 of 12.See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleThe Cradle series, like The Path of Ascension, immerses readers in a detailed existing world rather than transporting characters to a new one. Its unique power cultivation system and endearing protagonist, Lindon, make it an excellent choice for fans of fantasy who may not be fully committed to traditional LitRPG.

Lindon, born as an "Unsouled" in a village where sacred arts reign supreme, faces a seemingly hopeless future. However, a divine intervention offers him a new path. The series spans 12 books, culminating in a satisfying conclusion. If you enjoy Will Wight's writing style, his other works are also highly recommended.

  1. Beware of Chicken

### Beware of Chicken

30Book 1 of 4.See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleBeware of Chicken stands out with its unique narrative. Unlike other action-packed LitRPG stories, this series follows Jin Rou, a cultivator who abandons his quest for power to become a farmer. After his consciousness merges with someone from Earth, Jin Rou seeks a peaceful life, finding friendship, family, and unexpected power in his new, serene existence.

This series offers a refreshing, relaxing read that still fulfills the LitRPG fantasy craving.

  1. Defiance of the Fall

### Defiance of the Fall

36Book 1 of 15.See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleDefiance of the Fall is a long but rewarding series, beginning with an explosive first book and maintaining its momentum through 14 volumes, with a 15th on the horizon. The story follows Zachary Atwood, who must survive in a newly integrated multiverse using only a hatchet and his wits. As he battles to reunite with his family, Zac uncovers the mysteries of this new world.

The series' complex leveling system and skill progression keep readers engaged as Zac's journey expands beyond Earth.

  1. Sufficiently Advanced Magic (Arcane Ascension)

### Sufficiently Advanced Magic (Arcane Ascension)

30Book 1 of 5.See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleThe Arcane Ascension series introduces a world governed by god-like beings who offer "attunements" to those brave enough to navigate their dungeon-like spires. The protagonist, Corin Cadence, embarks on this perilous journey to earn his own attunement and uncover the mysteries surrounding his brother's disappearance.

The magic school setting and rich fantasy elements make this series an excellent entry point into LitRPG. Andrew Rowe's companion series further enrich the narrative, offering additional depth to the main story.

  1. The Grand Game

### The Grand Game

15Book 1 of 9.See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleFor fans of stealth games, The Grand Game offers a unique LitRPG experience. The protagonist, Michael, finds himself in the Forever Kingdom with no memory beyond his name. As he navigates this new realm filled with monsters and elites known as Powers, Michael learns to fight and advance through stealth and cunning.

The series, with seven books currently available and two more on pre-order, provides a fresh perspective on the genre.

  1. The Ritualist (The Completionist Chronicles)

### The Ritualist (The Completionist Chronicles)

30Book 1 of 11.See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleThe Completionist Chronicles serve as an excellent introduction to LitRPG, blending familiar RPG elements with innovative twists. The series follows Joe, an ex-military medic confined to a wheelchair, who finds a new life in a virtual MMORPG as a Ritualist. His journey through various worlds is both engaging and rewarding.

  1. Level Up or Die (Underworld Series)

### Level Up or Die (Underworld Series)

23See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleThe Underworld series offers a slow-burning narrative set in the literal underworld. Elorian, an avid gamer, finds himself trapped with other players, tasked with surviving and leveling up under the watchful eye of an ancient succubus intent on draining their power. The series, filled with adventure and mythical creatures, is a great starting point for LitRPG enthusiasts.
