Prerequisites:

Before upgrading, you need the Staff of Ice itself. Acquire it from the Mystery Box or by assembling its three components. Early access to the Dark Aether Nexus, achieved by opening the Door to Nowhere, is crucial.

Upgrade Steps:

Step 1: Freezing Dark Aether Crystals:

Freeze three Dark Aether Crystals rapidly using the Staff of Ice. Perks like Stamin-Up and PHD Flopper (with Tribologist) significantly aid this process. Optimize your route; the most efficient path begins in the tomb area, then the Shrine of the Hierophants, and finally the lantern near the Subterranean Temple entrance (avoiding the lantern near Quick Revive due to distance). Successful completion triggers a quote from Archibald, signaling your readiness for the Dark Aether Nexus.

Step 2: Targeting Floating Runes:

Within the Dark Aether Nexus, locate three floating rocks bearing glowing purple Runes. Each Rune displays a unique symbol. Use the Staff of Ice to shoot each Rune; a hitmarker confirms success. Shooting the Rune will lower the rock, making the symbol easier to identify. A sniper rifle or weapon with zoom can improve accuracy. The order of shooting is inconsequential.

Step 3: Solving the Rune Puzzle:

Return to the main map. A stone wall will replace a portal. This wall displays Runes; identify the three matching the symbols from the floating rocks. Shoot these three Runes with the Staff of Ice. The portal will open (regardless of accuracy), but incorrect selections will teleport you to an undesirable location within the Dark Aether Nexus. Multiple failures might necessitate waiting for the next round. Correct selections lead to a floating rock and a purple orb. Interact with the orb.

Step 4: Escorting the Soul Chest Orb:

The orb will begin moving. Aggressively eliminate zombies near the orb; their essence fuels its progress. The orb's path leads to a central structure in the Dark Aether Nexus, forming a small purple portal. Interact with this portal to upgrade your Staff of Ice to the Ull's Arrow.
