In The Witcher 4, a significant shift is underway: Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon, or Ciri, steps into the spotlight, replacing Geralt as the protagonist. This change has ignited considerable curiosity among fans, particularly regarding how it will reshape the game's combat mechanics. CD Projekt RED recently offered some intriguing insights during a podcast episode.
The developers highlighted a scene from the game's trailer showcasing Ciri battling a monster. She uses a chain—a charming callback to The Witcher 1—to subdue her foe. However, it's her fluid, acrobatic fighting style that truly distinguishes her.
The developers described the difference between Ciri and Geralt's combat approaches this way:
"There was this one scene where we see the chain, which is a tribute to The Witcher 1. When she grabs the monster’s head with it and pins it to the ground, she also performs an additional flip, which was really cool because you can’t imagine Geralt doing something like that. He’s very… I’d say he’s agile, but he’s also very… he feels almost like a ‘block’ in a way—he’s bulky and heavy. And she [Ciri] is just… she’s practically like liquid compared to [Geralt]."
This comparison underscores the dramatic contrast between the two characters. Geralt's combat style emphasizes strength and precise execution, while Ciri's is faster, more dynamic, and infused with her inherent agility. Her acrobatic maneuvers promise a thrilling new dimension to the gameplay, a stark departure from Geralt's grounded, stoic approach.
With Ciri leading the charge in The Witcher 4, players can anticipate a more fluid and fast-paced combat experience that perfectly mirrors her unique personality and abilities. As CD Projekt RED continues to unveil details, anticipation for the game soars. Will Ciri's gameplay live up to Geralt's legendary status? Only time will tell.
