Nintendo's Surprise: An Interactive Alarm Clock and a Mysterious Switch Online Playtest

Forget your expectations for 2024 – Nintendo has launched the Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo, an interactive alarm clock priced at $99. This isn't your average alarm; it uses game sounds from titles like Mario, Zelda, and Splatoon to rouse you from slumber, promising a truly immersive wake-up experience. More soundtracks are slated for free future updates.

The Alarmo's ingenuity lies in its motion-sensing technology. It won't shut off until you're fully out of bed, rewarding your efforts with a virtual "victory fanfare." While a hand wave can temporarily quiet the alarm, prolonged slumber only increases its intensity. Utilizing a radio wave sensor, the device tracks movement without compromising privacy, operating effectively even in low-light conditions and through obstacles. Nintendo highlights its superior privacy compared to camera-based solutions.

For a limited time, Nintendo Switch Online members in the US and Canada can snag the Alarmo exclusively through the My Nintendo Store. Physical copies are also available at the Nintendo New York store.

Simultaneously, Nintendo has announced a Switch Online playtest, inviting applications from October 10th to 15th. This test, focusing on a new Nintendo Switch Online feature, is open to 10,000 participants globally, with a first-come, first-served approach for non-Japanese applicants. Eligibility requires an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, being 18 or older, and having a Nintendo Account registered in specific countries (Japan, USA, UK, France, Germany, Italy, or Spain). The playtest itself runs from October 23rd to November 5th.
