Larian Studios, the creative force behind the critically acclaimed Baldur's Gate 3, has announced a media blackout as they shift their focus entirely to their next, unannounced project. While players eagerly anticipate Patch 8 for Baldur's Gate 3 later this year, Larian's leadership has confirmed their full attention is dedicated to this new venture. Swen Vincke, Larian's CEO, recently reflected on the studio's journey with Baldur's Gate 3, acknowledging its immense success but hinting at an exciting future. He tweeted, "Got me all nostalgic - it really has been an incredible journey so far. But the story ain't over yet. Stay tuned. Going to try to skip the dark night of the soul moment though if you don't mind."

In a subsequent statement to VideoGamer, Larian officially declared a media blackout, stating that the team's "full attention is focused on crafting their next title."

Details about this new game remain scarce. What we do know is that it won't be a Baldur's Gate 3 sequel or any other D&D-related project. Instead, Larian is embarking on a completely original creation, a decision made after internal discussions revealed a lack of enthusiasm for a direct Baldur's Gate follow-up.

Previous comments from Vincke offer only cryptic hints. In November 2023, he teased, "I wish I could tell you about our next big game but this is really encouraging us to ensure it pushes many boundaries. I’m very excited about it." Earlier, in July 2023, he mentioned the possibility of a future Divinity: Original Sin sequel, but emphasized that it wouldn't be their immediate priority. He stated, "It's our own universe we built, so we're definitely gonna get back there at some point...We'll first finish [Baldur's Gate 3], and then take a break, because we will need to refresh ourselves creatively also."

The mystery surrounding Larian's next project fuels speculation. Given their history with fantasy RPGs, a shift to science fiction, a modern setting, or even a completely new genre remains a distinct possibility. It seems likely that it will be some time—potentially years—before any concrete information is revealed.
