Sandfall Interactive, the developer behind Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, has rolled out Patch 1.2.3 for its critically acclaimed RPG across all platforms.
This update introduces numerous fixes alongside significant balance adjustments, most notably nerfing the game's most overpowered build (full patch notes below).
The studio had hinted at these impending changes, explaining they hadn't planned early balance revisions—only bug fixes—"unless something critically unbalanced emerged."
"Well, Stendhal certainly qualified," the developer noted.
The problematic build centered on young fencer Maelle and her Medalum sword, which unlocked a Virtuose Stance granting 200% bonus damage. Players exploited this by stacking abilities with the Stendahl skill—capable of devastating Void damage—to achieve billions in damage output, enough to one-shot the final boss.
"Throughout development, this combination underperformed, so we substantially boosted its damage right before launch—clearly overcompensating. It ultimately rendered other combat options obsolete," Sandfall admitted.
"We still encourage creative game-breaking strategies—which remain entirely possible—but Stendhal had trivialized the challenge."
This rebalance arrives in Clair Obscur's first comprehensive hotfix. While Stendhal retains its potency as a high-damage skill with strong synergy potential, its power now better aligns with other abilities.
The patch also resolves what appears to be a bug where Medalum's third Lumina erroneously doubled all Virtuose Stance damage rather than exclusively amplifying Burn effects.
Key highlights from today's patch:
Corrected Medalum's third Lumina incorrectly doubling all Virtuose Stance damage (now only affects Burn damage). Reduced Stendhal's damage output by 40%.

Clair Obscur has become Sandfall's breakout success, surpassing 2 million copies sold—particularly impressive considering its simultaneous Game Pass launch alongside Bethesda's Oblivion Remastered.
When Bethesda unexpectedly released The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered alongside Clair Obscur's debut, many anticipated stiff competition. Surprisingly, both RPGs found substantial audiences.
The title's remarkable performance even drew commendation from French President Macron. New players should review our essential tips before diving in.
