Black Beacon has just hit mobile devices, but we got an early sneak peek at this Mythic Sci-Fi Action RPG, and we're excited to share our impressions with you.
Black Beacon is an action RPG that prides itself on delivering fast, seamless combat enhanced by the ability to switch characters mid-battle.
The game starts in the Library of Babel, a vast and enigmatic edifice inspired by the biblical Tower of Babel and Jorge Luis Borges' short story. In the story, the library contains every conceivable combination of letters, housing every book ever written within its endless shelves.
You wake up in this bizarre place, unsure of how you arrived, surrounded by a cast of intriguing characters who share your confusion. It seems you’re destined for something great, but there’s a catch: a giant spinning orb threatens to obliterate everyone within 24 hours. Welcome to your first day as a Seer—hope you enjoy bookshelves!
Despite the humor, there’s an enchantingly chaotic charm to the setting and narrative. A library filled with nonsensical books, time travel, and a slew of mythological references (we won’t spoil too much, but keep an eye on that peculiar bird) immerse you deeply into the story. If you feel bewildered, that’s probably the intended effect.
Black Beacon offers an engaging moment-to-moment experience reminiscent of an ARPG dungeon crawler, complete with a customizable camera perspective. Whether you prefer a top-down view or a free camera setup where you can adjust the angle with your other hand, it’s all about personal preference.
You navigate through the Library’s corridors, progressing through the narrative in short, episodic segments, each containing multiple maps. Accessing these sections requires energy, though the game was quite generous with this resource during our playtime.
As you explore, you’ll solve puzzles, uncover hidden treasures, and battle enemies—distorted remnants of people the Library has yet to "fully digest." The combat is fast-paced and button-mashy yet retains enough challenge to keep you engaged. Perfect timing is key; a well-timed dodge grants iframes, while a heavy attack can interrupt an enemy’s move, sparing you from dodging.
The character-swapping mechanic adds depth to the combat, turning battles into tag-team matches. You can switch characters mid-fight to rest tired fighters and bring in fresh ones, even during attacks. Once you master the rhythm, it’s satisfying—until a mistimed dodge sends you flying down the hallway, courtesy of a giant monster.
As a gacha game, Black Beacon features character and weapon gacha systems, with weapons tailored to specific characters. Both can be leveled up using a variety of materials, though the game offers automation to simplify the process.
You might encounter characters through the gacha before meeting them in the story, but that’s all part of the convoluted flow of time in the game, adding variety to your experience.
Overall, Black Beacon stands out as a quirky gacha game with an ambition for a more esoteric narrative, backed by solid gameplay. We’re eager to see how it evolves post-release.
