"Buffy Reboot in Development; Sarah Michelle Gellar to Return"

It looks like Buffy might be slaying again at Hulu.

According to Variety, a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is on the verge of happening at Hulu, with Sarah Michelle Gellar in discussions to return as the iconic vampire-slaying hunter. While the series will introduce a new Slayer as its central character, Gellar is expected to appear as a recurring character, adding a nostalgic touch to the new narrative.

Adding to the excitement, Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao, celebrated for her work on Nomadland and Eternals, is in talks to direct and executive produce the reboot. The writing and showrunning duties will be handled by Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman. Notably, original series creator Joss Whedon will not be involved in this new project. Whedon, who oversaw the original series and the movie it was based on, faced allegations of fostering a toxic work environment during the production of both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spinoff, Angel.

While specific plot details remain under wraps, the focus will be on a new Slayer, with the possibility of Gellar reprising her role as Buffy Summers. The original series followed Buffy, a high school student chosen by fate to fight demons, vampires, and other supernatural beings. She was supported by her friends Willow Rosenberg and Xander Harris, along with her Watcher, Rupert Giles.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer originally aired from 1997 to 2003, spanning seven seasons. During this time, a spinoff titled Angel was also produced, and the story continued through a series of canon comic books.
