Dive into the thrilling world of the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, which introduces a new urban landscape described as a "Chicago gone wrong," complementing the iconic Night City. Get ready to explore this fresh setting and catch the latest updates on the game's Switch 2 port.
The highly anticipated sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, codenamed Project Orion, promises to enrich the gaming experience by adding another city to the mix alongside Night City. At the Digital Dragons 2025 conference on May 20, R. Talsorian Games founder and game designer Mike Pondsmith shared exciting updates about the upcoming sequel.
Although Pondsmith's involvement is less hands-on compared to Cyberpunk 2077, he remains closely connected to the project's development. He remarked, "I see the scripts. Last week I was wandering around talking to different departments and seeing what they had like, ‘this is the new Cyberware, what do you think?’"
Moreover, he hinted at the introduction of a new city, saying, "I remember looking at it and going, ‘I understand the feel that you’re going for, and this really does work, it doesn’t feel like Blade Runner, it feels more like Chicago gone wrong’. And I said, ‘yeah, I can see this working’," Pondsmith explained.
CD Projekt Red (CDPR) has also been actively recruiting for Cyberpunk 2, with a recent job listing for a Lead Encounter Designer. The role involves creating unforgettable gameplay experiences, with the goal of "help[ing] formulate solutions for and help[ing] create memorable gameplay encounters that will thrill and excite our players."
The job description suggests a groundbreaking approach, with daily tasks including "Work[ing] in close collaboration with the systems design team to create the most realistic and reactive crowd system in any game to date."
While details on Project Orion remain sparse, Pondsmith's insights and CDPR's hiring efforts indicate that Cyberpunk 2 will elevate the series' renowned world-building and narrative depth.
In other news, CDPR has released new footage showcasing Cyberpunk 2077's port for the Nintendo Switch 2. The studio has put considerable effort into optimizing the game for Nintendo's next-generation handheld console. On their website, CDPR has uploaded approximately 37 minutes of B-roll videos demonstrating the game's performance on the Switch 2.
Reports from Nintendo Switch 2 showcase events in New York and Paris earlier this year highlighted some performance challenges, including frame drops. Business Insider noted, "Such an intensive game playing on the Switch 2 is a fun novelty, but this definitely isn't the best way to play CyberPunk. I encountered lots of frame drops."
Despite these issues, CDPR Engineer Tim Green expressed satisfaction with the port's progress in a statement to Game File on April 25. He said, "We haven’t had to fight with fitting into memory, and the speed of the data storage has helped alleviate some of those early streaming problems. This has allowed us to focus our attention on improving other things, and we’re very happy with the result."
Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition is slated for release on the Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. This edition includes the complete base game, all post-launch updates, and the critically acclaimed Phantom Liberty expansion. Stay tuned for more updates by checking out our dedicated article below!
