With the much-anticipated release of the Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 2 and a significant update to its official website, the spotlight has shifted to the launch platforms and the new release date set for May 26, 2026. At the trailer's conclusion, viewers are greeted with the release date alongside logos of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, confirming that these consoles will be the initial launch platforms for GTA 6. Notably, the trailer was captured on a PS5, specifically highlighted as such, rather than the PS5 Pro.
This announcement raises questions about the future of GTA 6 on other platforms, particularly PC and the potential Nintendo Switch 2. Many fans had hoped that the delay to May 2026 might lead Rockstar Games and its parent company, Take-Two Interactive, to consider a simultaneous PC release. However, the absence of any mention of PC in the trailer suggests that this might not be the case. The omission aligns with Rockstar's historical approach to game releases, yet in today's gaming landscape of 2025 and 2026, it feels somewhat outdated. Given the growing significance of the PC market for multiplatform games, the lack of a PC release for GTA 6 at launch could be seen as a missed opportunity or even a strategic misstep.
In a February interview with IGN, Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, addressed the question of a PC release for GTA 6. He referenced the recent launch of Civilization 7, which was released across multiple platforms simultaneously, but noted that Rockstar typically adopts a staggered release strategy. "So with Civ 7 it's available on console and PC and Switch right away," Zelnick explained. "With regard to others in our lineup, we don't always go across all platforms simultaneously. Historically, Rockstar has started with some platforms and then historically moved to other platforms."
Despite the historical reluctance and the studio's sometimes rocky relationship with the PC modding community, some fans hoped that GTA 6 might signal a shift in Rockstar's approach to PC gaming. While big Rockstar titles do eventually make their way to PC, the exact timing for GTA 6 remains uncertain. Speculation ranges from a potential release in Fall 2027 to early 2027 or even a year later in May 2027.
In December 2023, a former Rockstar developer attempted to shed light on why GTA 6 would come to PC after the PS5 and Xbox Series X and S launch. They urged PC gamers to give the studio the "benefit of the doubt" regarding its staggered launch plans.
The potential impact of skipping a PC launch for GTA 6 is significant. Zelnick highlighted to IGN that the PC version of multiplatform games can account for 40% of sales, or even more in some cases. "We have seen PC become a much more and more important part of what used to be a console business, and I wouldn't be surprised to see that trend continue," he said, adding, "Of course, there will be a new console generation."
Meanwhile, the absence of the Nintendo Switch 2 logo in GTA 6 Trailer 2 might not come as a surprise. Although the capabilities of the Switch 2 remain undisclosed, it is slated to support titles like CD Projekt's Cyberpunk 2077. Given that GTA 6 is also planned for the less powerful Xbox Series S, some had hoped it might eventually make its way to Nintendo's next-generation console.
