Xu Wu is an incredibly agile boss in Monster Hunter Wilds. Its unpredictable movements make it difficult to anticipate attacks, especially due to its dark skin tone which obscures the front side of its body. In addition to its multiple limbs, the creature has the ability to vanish into walls and reappear on the ceiling before dropping down unexpectedly. Fortunately, this behavior is limited to its nest area, so remain extra vigilant when fighting within its lair.
One of the most effective strategies against Xu Wu is using Ice-based attacks. If you're using ranged weapons, try loading up on Ice ammo. For melee users, equipping gear that enhances elemental damage can be crucial. Consider adding a Frost Jewel decoration to boost your Ice Attack skill. Carrying a few Frost Pods can also help deliver light but consistent Ice-elemental damage during battle.
In addition to its rapid tentacle strikes and aerial dives, Xu Wu possesses a dangerous grab attack. If caught, you won't be able to use your standard weapon arsenal. However, you typically have around two seconds to break free. Using your slinger is your best bet, and Frost Pods are particularly effective for escaping this move quickly.
The monster’s mouth is its most vulnerable spot, although it's located underneath its body and only visible during certain attacks—especially when Xu Wu charges toward you. Landing a heavy hit during this moment can cause significant damage and even break the mouth, allowing you to obtain Xu Wu’s fang. If the mouth isn’t exposed, focus instead on the head, which shows strong weaknesses to blunt and cutting damage, and moderate vulnerability to ammo-based attacks.
Xu Wu exhibits a high susceptibility to Poison (3-star weakness). This makes bows with Poison Coating an excellent choice. While other status effects can be applied, avoid relying on Sleep, as it proves largely ineffective against this monster.

Once you reduce the boss’s health to approximately 20%, you’ll have an opportunity to attempt a capture. It’s highly recommended to use either a Pitfall Trap or a Shock Trap for this purpose. Luring Xu Wu in with bait meat works well, though experienced hunters may opt to use themselves as bait. After trapping the monster, immediately fire a tranquilizer dart to ensure it doesn’t escape. Be quick—there’s a short window before the beast breaks free.
That covers everything you need to know about engaging and capturing Xu Wu in Monster Hunter Wilds. Given its agility and speed, always monitor your stamina levels closely and stay prepared for sudden movements.
Monster Hunter Wilds is available now on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
