Hyper Light Breaker offers a diverse roster of characters, each with unique playstyles, to tackle the Abyss King. Unlocking new Breakers is surprisingly straightforward, though the game doesn't explicitly explain the process. This guide details all currently available characters and how to acquire them. Note that this guide reflects the early access version; more Breakers may be added later.
Unlocking new characters requires Abyss Stones, dropped exclusively by Crowns (bosses). Before facing Crowns, you'll need Prisms—keys to boss arenas—located on the map, indicated by golden diamond icons.
After defeating a Crown, return to the Cursed Outpost teleporter. Select the Breaker you wish to unlock and spend your accumulated Abyss Stones to add them to your roster. While nine characters exist, currently only two are unlockable via this method. The unlock process for future characters remains unconfirmed.
Each Breaker starts with a SyCom, defining their base stats and core perk, shaping their combat style. Here's a breakdown of each character and their strengths:
Vermillion, the starting character, defaults to the Gunslinger SyCom, favoring ranged combat. Critical Rail shots guarantee a subsequent crit. Alternatively, unlock the Tank SyCom for a melee-focused build rewarding perfect parries with increased armor and enhanced defensive stats.
Lapis begins with the Lightweaver SyCom, boosting Rail shot damage after Battery pickups. Unlock the Warrior SyCom to significantly increase core stats with each upgrade, making her exceptionally powerful late-game.
Goro is a ranged damage dealer. His Astrologer SyCom accelerates Blade skill charging while shooting, while the unlockable Sniper SyCom boosts critical hit rate. High damage potential is offset by a lack of defensive options, making him a high-risk, high-reward choice.
