CD Projekt Red has officially kicked off pre-production for Cyberpunk 2, confirming the highly anticipated sequel while announcing Phantom Liberty's impressive milestone of 10 million copies sold. Of the studio's 730 developers, 96 are now dedicated to bringing Night City's next chapter to life, though don't expect it anytime soon - most resources remain focused on The Witcher 4.
The project formerly known by its codename "Orion" is slowly taking shape, with Cyberpunk creator Mike Pondsmith recently sharing some tantalizing details during Digital Dragons 2025. While less involved than during 2077's development, Pondsmith revealed he's reviewing scripts and consulting with various teams.
"It's fascinating seeing the creative process firsthand," Pondsmith recounted, describing his recent studio visit. "Designers showing me prototype cyberware ideas - 'What do you think about this implant?' Those moments where you see something and immediately go 'Yeah, that fits perfectly.'"
Most intriguingly, he teased a major expansion of Cyberpunk's urban landscape: "There's an entirely new city alongside Night City this time. Not saying more than that, but imagine if Chicago underwent cyberpunk corruption." Pondsmith clarified this represents more of an aesthetic inspiration than literal adaptation.
The studio faces multiple challenges in expanding Cyberpunk's world. Will Night City receive substantial upgrades? Can two fully-realized cyberpunk metropolises coexist gameplay-wise? While concrete details remain scarce, Pondsmith's comments suggest CD Projekt aims higher than simply revisiting familiar streets.
Beyond the core franchise, CD Projekt maintains an ambitious multimedia strategy. Netflix prepares another Cyberpunk animation following Edgerunners' success, while Nintendo Switch 2 owners can soon experience 2077's base game on Nintendo's next-gen hardware.
One thing's certain - Night City's story continues unfolding, even if we'll need considerable chrome-level patience waiting for Orion's arrival.
