Although Thailand might be a world away from the magical halls of Hogwarts, Jason Isaacs, known for his role as Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter films and currently starring in The White Lotus Season 3, has shared his thoughts on who should take on his iconic role in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter TV series. In a recent interview with Variety, Isaacs suggested Meryl Streep as his top pick for the role.
"She can do anything, that woman. There's literally no limit to what she can do," Isaacs praised Streep. Interestingly, Streep has previously portrayed a male character, taking on the role of an elderly rabbi in the HBO miniseries adaptation of the play Angels in America. Given her versatility, many believe she could indeed pull off the role of Lucius Malfoy.
Despite his endorsement, Isaacs refrained from offering any advice to potential successors, stating, "I wouldn’t have any advice at all. Why would I bother? I know some of the people they’re casting already. They’re brilliant actors. It’s going to be fantastic, and the last thing they need is advice from some old fart like me."
Isaacs first brought Lucius Malfoy to life in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" and continued to portray the character through to "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2." As for the new adaptation, the only confirmed casting so far is John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, a role previously filled by Richard Harris and Michael Gambon. Rumors suggest that Paapa Essiedu might be cast as Severus Snape, originally played by Alan Rickman, and Janet McTeer could be stepping into the shoes of Minerva McGonagall, originally portrayed by Maggie Smith. However, these roles have yet to be officially confirmed.
