This marks a significant shift not only for Kojima Productions but also for Niantic. The studio, established by Konami veteran and visionary creator Hideo Kojima, is joining forces with the developer behind Pokémon Go and Monster Hunter Now to craft an entirely new interactive narrative adventure.
During the Beyond the Strand livestream, a teaser trailer highlighted the collaboration between Niantic Spatial (an offshoot of Niantic’s gaming division) and Kojima Productions. Released as part of the studio’s 10th-anniversary festivities, the “A New Dawn” teaser stops short of revealing concrete details about the joint endeavor.
It’s tempting to imagine an augmented reality adaptation of Death Stranding. However, given Kojima’s track record, the project is likely to venture even further into uncharted territory. Those familiar with his explorations of the “strand game” concept will recognize hints in this trailer, particularly in its interplay between physical and digital realms.

That was my initial reaction as well. Yet, it’s worth recalling that many of us responded similarly when Death Stranding’s first trailer premiered. Skepticism abounded regarding how Kojima’s unrestrained creativity would translate into a cohesive narrative, yet the Norman Reedus-led project ultimately (and largely) succeeded.
Despite speculation swirling around this endeavor, if it indeed materializes as a singular project, it likely won’t be a direct extension of Death Stranding. What it will undoubtedly carry, however, are the unmistakable hallmarks of Kojima’s artistic direction—however peculiar or unconventional they may seem.
