Marvel Rivals Issues Apology for Unfair Bans; Players Advocate for Expanded Character Ban System
NetEase, the developer of Marvel Rivals, recently issued a public apology for mistakenly banning a significant number of innocent players. The mass ban, intended to target cheaters, incorrectly flagged numerous users playing on non-Windows systems.
The affected players, primarily using Mac, Linux, and Steam Deck via compatibility layers (like Proton), were unjustly penalized. NetEase acknowledged the error, stating that compatibility software triggered their anti-cheat system. The bans have since been lifted, and the company apologized for the inconvenience. They encouraged players to report genuine cheating and offered an appeal process for wrongful bans.
Separately, a community debate has emerged regarding the game's character ban system. Currently, this feature—allowing players to remove specific characters from selection—is only available at Diamond rank and above. Many players, particularly those in lower ranks, feel this is unfair. They argue that implementing character bans across all ranks would improve gameplay balance, provide learning opportunities for new players, and encourage more diverse team compositions beyond simple DPS-focused strategies.
Reddit discussions highlight player frustration with the current system, with comments expressing the need for a more balanced competitive experience. While NetEase hasn't yet responded to this feedback, the demand for a broader implementation of character bans is growing within the Marvel Rivals community.
