Nexus Mods, a popular modding platform, finds itself at the center of a heated debate after removing over 500 user-submitted modifications for the game Marvel Rivals within a single month. The controversy ignited when mods replacing Captain America's head with images of Joe Biden and Donald Trump were taken down.
Nexus Mods' owner, known as TheDarkOne, addressed the situation in a private Reddit discussion. He clarified that both the Biden and Trump mods were removed simultaneously to prevent accusations of political bias. TheDarkOne expressed frustration that this simultaneous removal seemingly went unnoticed by many YouTube commentators.
The fallout extended beyond online criticism. TheDarkOne revealed receiving numerous threats and hateful messages following the mods' removal. He stated, "We're receiving death threats, being called pedophiles, and enduring all sorts of abuse simply because someone chose to escalate this issue."
This isn't the first time Nexus Mods has faced backlash over mod removals. A similar incident occurred in 2022, involving a Spider-Man Remastered mod that replaced rainbow flags. At that time, the platform's stance on inclusivity and the removal of discriminatory content was publicly affirmed.
TheDarkOne concluded the discussion by stating that Nexus Mods will not engage with those who find their moderation policies objectionable.
