In the world of RPGs, leveling up is key to conquering the challenges ahead, and Persona 5 Royal is no exception. Failing to level up your team can lead to struggles against formidable late-game bosses, forcing you to spend precious time grinding in Mementos. As an enhanced version of the original game, Persona 5 Royal boasts numerous quality-of-life improvements and an additional 20 hours of gameplay, including a new semester for the Phantom Thieves and revamped boss fights. To fully enjoy the rich content, it's crucial to keep your team's levels high and master the art of gaining experience efficiently.

Updated on January 13, 2025, by Renri Seong: While being over-leveled can make the game too easy, it's essential to match the level of Palace Rulers, especially in a fresh save file. Fortunately, Persona 5 Royal offers several strategies to streamline experience farming, from leveraging Confidant Skills to utilizing Jose in Mementos. Additionally, Joker can earn EXP for his non-active Personas with the Growth passive skill. This guide has been updated to include a new section on using the Insta-kill ability for rapid experience farming.

Accessories and The Moon Arcana

--------------------------------

Mishima Yuuki's Confidant

In Persona 5 Royal, you can boost your EXP gain by equipping the Team Glasses accessory, available as a free DLC from the PlayStation Store. Each character must wear these glasses to benefit from the 15% EXP boost during battles. However, only Joker and three other Phantom Thieves can participate in combat at once, leaving the backline members to receive less EXP.

To ensure your entire team levels up evenly, you'll need to deepen your bond with Mishima Yuuki, the Moon Confidant. By reaching Rank 3 and Rank 5 of his Confidant, backup members will start gaining EXP. Achieving Rank 10 means your reserve team will earn as much EXP as those on the front lines. Advancing Mishima's Confidant is straightforward—choose dialogue options that resonate with him and bring a Persona of the Moon Arcana when you hang out. Remember, Mishima's Mementos Missions are now tied to his Confidant, so don't neglect them if you want to progress.

Mementos: Increase EXP Gain

----------------------------

Cognition of Mementos

Persona 5 Royal introduces Jose, a character who, while not central to the plot, significantly aids in gameplay. Explore Mementos to find "flowers" and "Stamp Stations." These can be exchanged with Jose for items or to alter Mementos' Cognition. In Jose's Shop, you can choose to increase EXP, Money, or Item Rewards. To boost EXP gains to 110%, you'll need 5 Stamps; maxing it out at 200% requires 12 Stamps. There are 165 Stamps in total, but you'll need 85 to max out EXP Up. Look for Stamp Stations in dead ends behind breakable walls, and you might encounter Jose as you navigate new floors.

Fight the Reaper

-----------------

What Level is the Reaper?

The Reaper is a formidable foe in the Persona series, appearing in Mementos when you linger too long on a floor. Warning signs include a blinking red screen, the sound of chains, and alerts from Morgana or Futaba. Early in the game, defeating the Reaper is a tall order unless you're on a New Game+ file. With -dyne tier spells and powerful Support skills like Concentrate and elemental Breaks, the Reaper is a level 85 enemy with high stats, though his Agility (75) is the lowest.

Taking down the Reaper is a lucrative endeavor, rewarding your team with a hefty amount of experience and money, often enough to level up everyone. Aim to confront the Reaper at level 60 or above, and equip Defense-raising Support skills. Use Makarakarn to reflect his magic attacks, or leverage the Persona DLC's Izanagi-no-Okami (Picaro) to stack Concentrate, Heat Riser, and unleash Myriad Truths for massive Almighty damage.

Defeat Treasure Demons

-----------------------

How to Summon Treasure Demons

Treasure Demons are unique Shadows that debut in Madarame's Palace and subsequently appear in the Metaverse. Unlike regular Shadows, they're harmless but will flee after a few turns. Each type of Treasure Demon has different Affinity Weaknesses and Immunities, though all are vulnerable to Almighty attacks. To defeat them before they escape, use Shinya's Rank 1 Ability, Down Shot, to knock them down for an All-Out Attack. Alternatively, try Morgana's Miracle Punch for a high-crit attack, provided the Treasure Demon isn't immune to Physical damage.

Treasure Demons spawn in Palaces when security is high. You can also craft the Treasure Trap infiltration tool to increase encounters, using 2 Silk Yarn, 3 Plant Balm, and 1 Cork Bark.

Use Persona with EXP Skills

----------------------------

How to Get Growth Passive Skill

Joker's non-equipped Personas typically don't earn EXP at the end of battles, but those with the Growth passive skill can gain a percentage of experience even when not in use. There are three levels of Growth Skills:

  • Growth 1: Persona gains a quarter EXP when inactive.
  • Growth 2: Persona gains half EXP when inactive.
  • Growth 3: Persona will gain full EXP when inactive.

The following Personas learn Growth when leveling:

Persona Growth 1
  • Saki Mitama (level 7)
  • Koppa Tengu (level 12)
Growth 2
  • Lachesis (Innate)
  • Kurama Tengu (level 36)
  • Thoth (level 42)
  • Ananta (level 47)
Growth 3
  • Izanagi (level 25)
  • Izanagi Picaro (level 28)
  • Narcissus (level 50)
  • Raphael (level 81)

With the Electric Chair unlocked in the Velvet Room, you can transform Personas into Skill Cards. However, in Persona 5 Royal, only Izanagi Picaro can be turned into a Growth Skill Card (Growth 3). Growth 1 Skill Cards are unavailable, while Growth 2 can be obtained by spending time with Caroline and Justine at Miura Beach between September 2nd and September 29th, after clearing event 6 (Sky Tower).

Ryuji Sakamoto's Confidant

---------------------------

How to Unlock Insta-Kill

Insta-kill is a powerful skill that allows Joker to eliminate Shadows instantly during an ambush. To use it, ensure Joker's level is at least 10 levels above the target Shadow. In Persona 5 Royal, a successful Insta-kill not only defeats the Shadow but also yields items, yen, experience, and potentially a new Persona. Use Joker's Third Eye to identify Shadows with a green outline, indicating they're vulnerable to Insta-kill.

To unlock Insta-kill, you must reach Rank 7 of Ryuji Sakamoto's Confidant. Fortunately, there are no Social Stat requirements, making his Confidant one of the easiest to max out. To expedite the process, spend time with Ryuji and select dialogue options that resonate with him before delving into other Confidants.
