Minecraft Creator Notch Hints at Minecraft 2 Development
Markus "Notch" Persson, the original creator of Minecraft, has ignited excitement among fans by suggesting a potential Minecraft sequel is in the works. A recent poll on X (formerly Twitter) revealed his current development focus: a hybrid roguelike/first-person dungeon crawler. However, he expressed significant openness to creating a "spiritual successor" to his iconic creation.
The poll, conducted on January 1st, overwhelmingly favored the Minecraft 2 option, garnering 81.5% of nearly 300,000 votes. This strong response reflects the enduring popularity of the original Minecraft, which boasts tens of millions of daily players globally.
In a subsequent post, Notch confirmed his seriousness, stating he had "basically announced Minecraft 2." He acknowledged the desire for a similar game and his renewed passion for development. He emphasized that while he's open to either project, the fan response heavily influenced his decision. He clarified that he respects Mojang Studios and Microsoft's continued work on the Minecraft IP and intends to avoid any copyright infringement.
Notch acknowledged the inherent risks in developing spiritual successors, noting their unpredictable nature. Despite this, he expressed his willingness to tackle the challenge, driven by fan demand and the potential for commercial success.
While awaiting Notch's potential new project, fans can anticipate other Minecraft-related ventures, including themed amusement parks slated for the UK and US in 2026 and 2027, and the upcoming live-action film, "A Minecraft Movie," set for release later in 2025.
