Monster Hunter Wilds Unveils Oilwell Basin and its Fiery Inhabitants
Prepare for a volcanic adventure! In an exclusive interview with IGN, Monster Hunter Wilds directors Yuya Tokuda and Kaname Fujioka showcased the game's new Oilwell Basin locale and its fearsome inhabitants. This unique, vertically structured area offers a stark contrast to the series' typical horizontal landscapes.
Fujioka explains the Basin's layered structure: "The deeper you venture, the hotter and more magma-filled it becomes." The upper levels are swampy and oily, transitioning to a volcanic, almost underwater ecosystem at the bottom, especially during the "Plenty" event. The design draws inspiration from Monster Hunter World's Coral Highlands. Tokuda highlights the unique flora and fauna found throughout the Basin, thriving even in this seemingly desolate environment.
The Oilwell Basin's apex predator is the Nu Udra, a colossal, octopus-like creature with a flammable, slimy body. Its powerful tentacles ensnare prey before unleashing devastating fire attacks. Fujioka reveals the design intention: "I always wanted to include a tentacled monster." The demonic aesthetic, complete with horn-like head protrusions, is further enhanced by its unique battle music, inspired by black magic. Flash Bombs are ineffective against this visionless beast, relying solely on its sensitive tentacles.
The Basin is teeming with other formidable creatures. The Ajarakan, a fiery, ape-like monster, utilizes martial arts-inspired attacks. Rompopolo, a bizarre, spiky creature, employs toxic gas in combat, its design inspired by the stereotypical mad scientist. Surprisingly, its rewards yield "cute" equipment.
A familiar face returns: Gravios, from Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, makes a comeback, fitting seamlessly into the volcanic landscape. Its inclusion provides a fresh challenge, according to Tokuda.
With the Oilwell Basin and its diverse monster roster, Monster Hunter Wilds promises an unforgettable hunting experience. Prepare for battle when the game launches on February 28th!
