Naughty Dog's recent statements suggest The Last of Us franchise may have reached its conclusion. Discover what the future holds for this iconic series and the studio's current projects.

The critically acclaimed The Last of Us saga might conclude with Part 2, according to Naughty Dog's leadership. In a March 2025 Variety interview, studio co-president Neil Druckmann addressed fan speculation about The Last of Us Part 3.
"I wouldn't count on seeing more from The Last of Us universe," Druckmann stated. "This might be the end of the road." These comments cast doubt on the franchise's gaming future as Naughty Dog shifts focus to expanding the television adaptation.
Druckmann previously discussed his philosophy on sequels during 2025's DICE Summit. "Planning sequels while developing the first installment can be counterproductive," he told IGN. "When creating The Last of Us Part 2, I occasionally considered potential story directions - but my approach was always to treat each project as potentially the last. Great ideas deserve implementation, not perpetual postponement for hypothetical sequels."
With The Last of Us Part 2 delivering a conclusive finale, Druckmann's statements strongly suggest no further game sequels are planned. Fans can continue the journey through HBO's The Last of Us Season 2, premiering April 13, 2025.

While The Last of Us appears concluded, Naughty Dog is developing an ambitious new IP. At The Game Awards 2024, the studio unveiled Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, an original PlayStation 5 title in development since 2020.
The teaser trailer revealed stunning visuals and a bold sci-fi premise. Though details remain scarce, the project promises to push creative boundaries beyond Naughty Dog's previous work.

Naughty Dog's cancellation of The Last of Us Online directly supported Intergalactic's development. Former Sony executive Shuhei Yoshida explained on the Sacred Symbols+ podcast that Bungie's counsel about live-service game demands influenced the decision.
"Bungie helped us understand the long-term commitment required for online games," Yoshida revealed. "When Naughty Dog realized maintaining The Last of Us Online would prevent completing Intergalactic, they made the tough but necessary choice."
The Last of Us 2 Remastered arrives April 3, 2025 for PC, offering fans one last chance to revisit this beloved world. For complete details about the remastered edition, check our comprehensive coverage.
