Palworld Developer Surprise Launches Another Game on Nintendo Switch Despite Lawsuit

Pocketpair's Surprise Nintendo Switch Launch Amidst Legal Battle

Pocketpair, the developer embroiled in a patent infringement lawsuit, unexpectedly released its 2019 title, OverDungeon, on the Nintendo eShop. This action card game, blending tower defense and roguelike elements, marks Pocketpair's Nintendo Switch debut. The launch coincided with a 50% discount celebrating the game's arrival on the platform.

The company has faced significant scrutiny following a September 2024 lawsuit filed by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company, alleging patent infringement related to Palworld's Pal Sphere system. Despite this ongoing legal challenge, Pocketpair has remained active, releasing a major update for Palworld in December and now launching OverDungeon on a competing platform. This strategic move has sparked speculation online, with some suggesting it's a calculated response to the lawsuit.

OverDungeon, initially a Steam exclusive, is now available on Nintendo Switch consoles. The decision to release on the Nintendo eShop, while Palworld is on PlayStation 5 and Xbox, has raised questions. The lack of prior announcements regarding the OverDungeon launch adds to the intrigue. The 50% launch discount, valid until January 24th, further emphasizes the surprise release.

Pocketpair's History of Style Comparisons

OverDungeon isn't Pocketpair's first game to draw comparisons to Nintendo properties. Their 2020 RPG, Craftopia, bore striking resemblance to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Despite this, Craftopia continues to receive updates. Meanwhile, Palworld, despite the lawsuit, remains actively supported, recently announcing a crossover with Terraria, featuring a new Pal, Meowmeow, with more collaborations planned for 2025.

The legal battle between Pocketpair, Nintendo, and The Pokémon Company remains largely undisclosed. Patent law experts predict a protracted legal process if a settlement isn't reached. Beyond the Terraria crossover, Pocketpair has hinted at future Palworld developments in 2025, including Mac and potential mobile releases.
