In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, the Dark/Dragon-type Hydreigon stands out as one of the most powerful Pokémon. To add this formidable creature to your team, you'll first need to obtain its pre-evolutions: Deino and Zweilous. Evolving this fearsome trio culminates in the mighty Hydreigon, but there's a catch: Deino and its evolutions are exclusive to Pokémon Scarlet. This guide will walk you through obtaining and evolving Deino, regardless of whether you're playing Scarlet or Violet.
Updated January 13, 2025 by Renri Seong: The Deino line, debuting in Generation V, continues its legacy in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet as version exclusives. While easily caught in the wild within Pokémon Scarlet, acquiring one in Violet requires trading or transferring. This guide has been updated with the latest information on Hydreigon's stats and type matchups, helping you decide if it's the right Pokémon for your team.
In Pokémon Scarlet, you can find Deino in several locations: Alfornada Cavern, Dalizapa Passage, Glaseado Mountain, Area Zero, and North Province (Area Two). While Glaseado Mountain, Area Zero, and North Province (Area Two) are readily accessible, Alfornada Cavern and Dalizapa Passage require a bit more exploration. Expect to encounter Deino at levels 35-40 in Dalizapa Passage and Alfornada Cavern; Koraidon's high jump ability will be essential for navigating the latter.
Three-star Tera Raids (unlocked after three Gym Badges) also offer a chance to encounter Deino, often with different Tera Types and a possibility of possessing its Hidden Ability. Zweilous, Deino's evolved form, can be found in the same wild locations, as well as in four-star Tera Raids. Hydreigon appears in five and six-star Tera Raids.

Hydreigon's double weakness to Fairy-type moves can be mitigated by Terastallizing. Offensively, consider Tera Types that provide STAB (Same-Type Attack Bonus) for moves like Flash Cannon (the only Steel-type move it can learn via TM). Its moveset allows for both physical and special attacking strategies. Nasty Plot, Dragon Pulse (or Draco Meteor), and Dark Pulse are also recommended moves. The significant Fairy-type weakness necessitates a Steel-type move in its moveset.
