Niantic has unveiled the details for the Pokemon GO Lunar New Year 2025 event, set to kick off on January 29, offering players a chance to catch Lucky Pokemon, Shiny Pokemon, and other exciting rewards. Much like the current Fashion Week event, participants in Pokemon GO can also complete Field Research tasks to earn additional bonus rewards during the Lunar New Year festivities.
As Pokemon GO celebrates its ninth anniversary in 2025, the beloved AR game is gearing up for a series of new events and updates leading into the summer and Pokemon GO Fest. Among these, the Pokemon GO Tour: Unova event will take place in Los Angeles and New Taipei City from February 21 to 23, with a global event following in March. Before diving into the Unova event, players can enrich their collections with new Pokemon during the Lunar New Year event.
The Pokemon GO Lunar New Year event is scheduled from Wednesday, January 29, at 10:00 a.m. to Sunday, February 2, 2025, at 8:00 p.m. local time. Niantic has promised an increased chance of obtaining Lucky Pokemon through trades during the event, along with a higher likelihood of becoming Lucky Friends, which further boosts the chances of getting Lucky Pokemon. Players will encounter Ekans, Onix, Snivy, Darumaka, Dunsparce, Gyarados, and Dratini more frequently in the wild, with an enhanced chance of encountering their Shiny variants. Additionally, 2 km Eggs will hatch into Makuhita, Nosepass, Meditite, Duskull, and Skorupi during the event period.
Lunar New Year-themed Field Research and Timed Research tasks will be available, along with Routes, offering Stardust, XP, and encounters with event-themed Pokemon as rewards. Players can collect Zygarde Cells by participating in Routes during the event. For those looking to maximize their rewards, the event-exclusive Paid Timed Research can be purchased for $2, providing two Lucky Eggs, an incubator, and encounters with Ekans and Nosepass. All Field Research and Timed Research rewards must be claimed before February 2 at 8:00 p.m. local time, so players are encouraged to redeem their rewards promptly after completing their tasks.
Players can also enter their Lunar New Year Pokemon in Pokemon GO's PokeStop Showcases to earn additional rewards based on the showcase's results, including item bundles. Niantic has confirmed that an event-themed Collection Challenge will be available, and completing it will grant additional Stardust for trading. As a result, frequent traders stand to benefit significantly from participating in the Lunar New Year event later this month.
