In the vast world of Project Zomboid, traversing the map on foot is a monumental task. Fortunately, many vehicles remain functional, and if you lack the keys, hotwiring is a viable option. This guide explains how to hotwire a car in Project Zomboid.
Hotwiring is surprisingly simple, requiring only a few button presses, but there are prerequisites. While not needing a top-tier build, you'll need specific skills or a starting profession.
Hotwiring Mechanics in Project Zomboid
Successfully hotwiring allows you to drive a vehicle as long as it has fuel and is in good condition, regardless of possessing the keys. However, you need at least Level 1 Electrical and Level 2 Mechanics skills. Alternatively, choosing the Burglar profession at character creation bypasses these skill requirements.
How to Hotwire a Car:
After meeting the prerequisites, follow these steps on any operable vehicle. Hotwiring is automated; once complete, press W to start the engine. Remember to check fuel levels beforehand.
Leveling Electrical and Mechanical Skills:
For non-Burglars, increase skills through in-game activities:
Books and magazines also provide skill boosts. Check mailboxes, sheds, and bookshelves while looting. Project Zomboid server admins can use the "/addxp" command to directly grant skill XP.
Remember to use a screwdriver or appropriate tool for dismantling and installation. Right-click vehicle parts and select "Vehicle Mechanics" to remove them.
