SAG-AFTRA's Strike Against Video Game Giants: A Fight for AI Protections and Fair Compensation

SAG-AFTRA, the actors' union, launched a strike against major video game companies on July 26th, 2024, after prolonged negotiations failed to yield a satisfactory agreement. This action targets prominent companies including Activision, Electronic Arts, and others, primarily due to concerns surrounding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the industry.

Key Issues: AI and Fair Compensation

The core dispute centers on the potential misuse of AI. While not inherently opposed to AI technology, SAG-AFTRA members express deep concern about its potential to replace human performers. The union highlights the risk of unauthorized AI replication of actors' voices and likenesses, and the threat to smaller roles that often serve as crucial stepping stones for aspiring actors. Furthermore, ethical concerns arise when AI-generated content contradicts an actor's personal values.

Temporary Solutions and Agreements

To address the challenges, SAG-AFTRA has developed alternative agreements. The Tiered-Budget Independent Interactive Media Agreement (I-IMA) offers a flexible framework for lower-budget projects ($250,000 - $30 million), incorporating AI protections initially rejected by the video game industry bargaining group. A side deal with Replica Studios allows union actors to license digital voice replicas under specific terms, including the right to opt out of perpetual use.

Additionally, the Interim Interactive Media Agreement and the Interim Interactive Localization Agreement provide temporary solutions covering various aspects, including compensation, AI usage, working conditions, and payment terms. Projects approved under these agreements are exempt from the strike.

Negotiation History and Union Resolve

Negotiations began in October 2022, culminating in a near-unanimous (98.32%) strike authorization vote by SAG-AFTRA members in September 2023. Despite progress on some issues, the lack of robust AI protections remains the primary stumbling block. Union leaders emphasize the video game industry's substantial profits and the crucial contribution of SAG-AFTRA members, demanding fair treatment and protection against AI exploitation.
