Konami's latest Silent Hill Transmission unveiled Silent Hill f, a chilling new entry in the beloved horror franchise, transporting players to 1960s Japan.
First announced in 2022, Silent Hill f was described as a game set within a "beautiful, therefore terrifying" world. The game's narrative is penned by Ryukishi07, the acclaimed writer behind the Higurashi and Umineko visual novel series.
Now, after nearly three years, we have a much clearer picture of Silent Hill f.
Silent Hill f: Finding Beauty in Terror
Konami showcased a new trailer and revealed the game aims to "find the beauty in terror," presenting players with a difficult choice within the unsettling beauty of 1960s Japan. While the nature of this choice remains shrouded in mystery, the story unfolds around Shimizu Hinkao, an ordinary teenager whose life is irrevocably altered when her town is consumed by fog and horrific transformations. She must navigate this unrecognizable landscape, solving puzzles, battling strange enemies, and ultimately confronting a fateful decision. This is a tale of a beautiful, yet terrifying choice. This original story offers a welcoming entry point for newcomers, while seasoned fans can anticipate rewarding Easter eggs. The game is set in the fictional Japanese town of Ebisugaoka, inspired by the real-life Kanayama, Gero, in Gifu Prefecture.
Creature and character designer kera shared an insightful message, hinting at the horrors awaiting players: "I love the Silent Hill series, and it's been a big influence on me. In particular, I am constantly remembering Silent Hill 2, and the messages on the walls, the music, and the monster designs. So, when it came to Silent Hill f, and bringing the setting to Japan, we had to come up with something that felt just a little different, and I had to really think about how to get that feeling. The monster designs were the hardest. I had to consider everything that's come in Silent Hill before, and figure out how to take this game in a different direction, but still be Silent Hill. It might not be the exact same blood-smeared, rusting scenery, but I sincerely hope you'll enjoy our vision and the world we've created."
Music plays a pivotal role, with veteran Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka and Kensuke Inage (known for his work on the Dynasty Warriors series) crafting the soundscapes of the Fog World and Otherworld, respectively. Inage describes his contribution as "music for an unsettling yet beautiful world that uses imagery from shrines, blending ancient Japanese court music with ambient echoes. I wove in various techniques that will connect the player to the protagonist's agony, internal conflict, fear, and other emotions."
While a release date remains unannounced, Silent Hill f is confirmed for release on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
